PRESENTER: Jessica Strawser
Saturday, May 6, 3:30-4:30

Having 15+ years of career experience with book AND magazine editing, and having written and published both books (my debut novel, Almost Missed You, releases from St. Martin’s Press in March, with another slated for 2018) and articles/essays (appearing in venues from regional and niche publications to The New York Times), I have unique insights into the writer-editor relationship—from both sides of the desk. You might be surprised to learn that how you conduct yourself from Day 1 (and in some cases, even before you submit) can set the tone for everything that follows—including how many assignments you get (for magazines) and how much love your book gets from the sales team (never underestimate your editor’s influence). Editors prefer to work with writers who are savvy about their industry or genre, have some kind of a platform, submit quality work and are reliable and professional. Here’s how to secure your place on their lists of go-to writers.
