CONFERENCE FAQ'S

Do I need to sign up ahead of time for the sessions I want to take?
No, you can choose the sessions you want to attend during the conference.

I am not prepared to pitch my book idea to a literary agent at this time because I am still very new to writing. Will I be able to get much out of the conference?
Yes! The eight-minute pitch sessions are a very small part of the conference. There is so much more to the event beyond these. Over the course of the weekend you will have a chance to attend 8 different workshops from industry professionals , (giving you 8 hours of direct instruction), listen to an amazing keynote speaker, connect with other writers, talk with agents and editors (even if you aren't pitching to them), get a feel for what is going on in the publishing industry and most importantly, inspire your writing. For two days you will be immersed in the world of writing and get to hang out with people who are as passionate about it as you are."

I signed up for a pitch session, but I am not sure how to prepare for it or if I should even be pitching. Do you have any advice?
There is an article on Women On Writing, called How 2 Pitch to an Agent at a Writers Conference by the NCW Director Kerrie Flanagan. Read this and it should answer your questions.

How do I know which agent/editor to pitch to?
On the conference webpage the faculty is listed on the right. Find the section with the agents and editors. If you click on the name, it will take you to the agent/editor website where you can read more about what they are looking for. Take some time to look over each of the agents/editors to find the one's that are best suited to your writing. Don't sign up for a pitch session with someone who clearly does not represent your genre.

How are pitch sessions assigned?
Pitch sessions are assigned based on when you register, so the earlier you register, the more likely you are to get a pitch session. You must be paid in full in order to hold that spot. Each person interested in pitching will get one session (as long as there is still room). Following registration the day of the event, if there are any open sessions, those will be posted and you will be able to sign up for another one at that time.

What is the dress code?
There is no specific dress code, but business attire is recommended. Participants tend to dress up a little more for Friday's evening events.

COMMENTS ABOUT 2011 CONFERENCE

"Just wanted to thank you so much for inviting me to present at this year's NCW Conference. It was sublime. I do a bunch of writers conferences, and yours was the best organized and most fun! Such a great crew you have."  ~Sandi Ault

"Well, you did it again. I thought the conference was excellent, and I've heard nothing but complements about the sessions, the food, your creative team's fun presentation (and the hard work everyone knows went on in advance and behind the scenes)."  ~Pat Stoltey

"Thanks again for inviting Dom to take part at the NCW Conference last week. I have to say: we find ourselves at many, many conferences, but yours was among the best we’ve seen. Kudos on putting together such a terrific event."  ~Dominic Testa

"Thank you for putting on such a wonderful conference. I learned so much about publishing and pitching to agents that I think some day I actually will  have a children's book on the market!  Going to the conference has renewed my excitement and passion for writing and I anxious to see what my near future holds!" ~Stefanie
