The Hero’s Journey is a template used to examine and analyze the archetypal complexity of a hero, but does this template still hold value in a new era of storytelling? This new era is one where antiheroes, fallen heroes, and characters of dubious origin and ethics are becoming the new staple for science-fiction and fantasy consumers. If all heroic journeys are symbolic of soul transformation and social metaphor, what does this shift say about writers and audiences alike? And just what kinds of stories are now being taught?
